When can I safely resume driving after hand or wrist surgery?

The timing for resuming driving after hand or wrist surgery varies depending on the specific procedure and your individual recovery. Generally, patients can consider driving once they have regained sufficient strength, mobility, and pain control to operate a vehicle safely without discomfort or delayed reaction time. This often means waiting until you are no longer using a sling, your surgeon has cleared you, and you can perform an emergency stop confidently. It is essential to follow the personalised advice provided by Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon as driving too soon may compromise your healing and safety. Always prioritise your recovery and consult with us before getting behind the wheel.

As a general rule you should not drive until at least your 2 weeks post-op check.
